Thursday, 24 February 2011
February 23, 2011, Prince Rupert, British Columbia-Today the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for four projects in the Skeena-Bulkley Valley region to enhance the viability of existing tourism operations.

“Our Government understands the value of fostering new economic opportunities in our communities,” said Minister Yelich, “With our investment in these projects, we will improve tourism, attract investment, and create jobs in the Skeena-Bulkley Valley region.”

The projects announced today range in scope, from the development of a 10 kilometre wilderness trail to the restoration of an historic museum. They share common goals of creating immediate jobs and ensuring that local economies are strong and diversified.

Federal funding of $593,000 is provided through the West Coast Community Adjustment Program (WestCCAP).

"The goal of Community Futures is to assist communities to maximize the economic benefits and diversification opportunities that support long-term economic sustainability in regional communities,” said Cathy Robertson, Chairperson of the Fisheries Legacy Trust. “We are pleased to partner with the federal government and other community partners through programs such as WestCCAP, which provides resources to assist in achieving this goal."

The West Coast Community Adjustment Program will provide more than $7 million to support economic growth, job creation and the future sustainability of B.C. coastal communities affected by challenges within the salmon fishery. The Fisheries Legacy Trust, comprised of the 13 west coast Community Futures, is delivering this initiative on behalf of Western Economic Diversification Canada. The Government of Canada supports initiatives that combat challenges facing traditional industries, protect resources in affected areas in order to support the long-term success of resource-dependent communities.

Western Economic Diversification Canada works with the provinces, industry associations and communities to promote the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and advances the interests of western Canadians in national decision making.
